Research Assistant

Wara Irfan

Wara Irfan is a senior at the Department of Social Sciences and Liberal Arts at IBA, Karachi. She is majoring in Media and Cultural Studies and her research interests primarily lie within fields of media cultures and their interaction with different communities. She is an avid fan of films and television shows from across the globe. Currently, she is interested in dubbing cultures and foreign dubbed films and TV shows. In her free time, you are most likely to find her binge-watching Ru Paul’s Drag Race.


Maheen

Maheen is a final year SSLA student majoring in political science. Her research interests include security studies, policy making, critical analysis of literature, and personality psychology. Her other interests include playing football, reading fiction literature as an escape from reality and dance choreography.


Ali Abdul Karim Samoo

Ali is a senior in the SSLA department, majoring in history with a keen interest in urban studies and queer theory. They are also an archival researcher at the Karachi Urban Lab, part of the team working on the Cool Infrastructures project, locating colonial, indigenous and post-colonial narratives around heat and cooling systems in Karachi. In his free time, Ali likes to sip/pill tea and occasionally indulge in performance art.


Eisha

Sameen

Sameen is a final year history student in the SSLA program. Her research interests include critical animal studies, intersectionality, multispecie, and feminist care theory. She is the manager of AWSA - a society focused on providing care to stray animals on campus. In her free time, Sameen practices Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and rescues street animals.


Safina Azeem Qureashi

A history student in the SSLA dept., Safina is interested in facilitating dialogue on gender and youth activism. Her thesis is a feminist labor studies project engaging with themes of care and intimacy. She is currently a research assistant for FACT Pakistan, a ten-country digital ethnography on COVID-19 impacts. Recently, her paper on 'Institutions in a Time of Crisis' was presented at the Canadian Sociological Associations Conference. Her other interests include cooking, photography and playing with her cats.


Kaleem

Kaleem is a junior year student majoring in Media & Cultural Studies for their undergrad. They think with – and write in – different languages. Their research interest lies at the intersection of the body, the spectral, and nature, as imagined in feminist and postcolonial studies. Lately, they have been spending a significant proportion of their day allegedly singing to the ghosts on the trees all around the campus - often in the most questionable musical notes.


Zahabiya

Zahabiya is a senior in the SSLA department at IBA, majoring in Media and Culture. Her interests lie in urban studies and photojournalism. She is a freelance photographer and aims to merge the discipline of photography with her academic research and learning.
